Overview

Welcome to Jet Tools 2019, the 2nd heavy-ion jet substructure workshop, to be held at the University of Bergen, Norway in May 13-17 2019. The workshop aims at bringing together theorists and experimentalists interested in jet observables in heavy-ion collisions.

Please head over to our site on Indico for updated information!

The study of QCD jets and their modifications in the dense nuclear environment provided in heavy-ion collisions is generally motivated by two main aspects. Most prominently, jets serve as well-controlled probes of the characteristics of the underlying medium. Also, the processes underlying jet quenching share many similar features with generic equilibration mechanisms. In this respect, characterizing medium modifications of jet substructure may open a window for testing the dynamics responsible for medium collective behavior, for which there is ample experimental evidence.

The scope of the workshop will span a wide range of the most pressing topics in the field of jet physics in heavy-ion collisions, striving to connect theoretical ideas with concretely defined observables and explore the related technical challenges. These include:

  • new tools for jet physics at the frontiers
  • jet substructure and heavy flavor
  • splitting maps of the medium-modified shower
  • jet modifications in small systems
  • statistical & machine-learning techniques
  • interplay between jets and underlying events

The format of the meeting continues the tradition from the joint Heavy-ion jet workshop and CERN TH institute «Novel tools and observables for jet physics in heavy-ion collisions», mixing in-depth talks with active discussions and working groups. In advance of the workshop, there will be a prepared virtual working environment open to all participants, and communication channels through Slack and Twiki pages.

During the first sessions of the meeting, we will strive to define the most pressing tasks to be studied in the course of working sessions. The results will be gathered in a final report that will be finalized in the aftermath of the meeting.

If you are interested, please provide in the registration form a few key topics that you would be interested in discussing in order for us to set up the working groups. If you wish to give a talk during the workshop, please indicate so during the registration.

UPDATE: registration and abstract submission are now open! For further information please contact konrad.tywoniuk@uib.no.
